Glimstedt advises: the new Bioforce biomethane station is open for business

On April 12, 2024, Estonia’s most modern biomethane plant, owned by the Bioforce Group, was opened in Ebavere, capable of handling up to 130 000 tonnes of biodegradable materials per year. Biomethane is an indigenous biofuel from renewable sources, with over 95% methane (CH₄), with properties equivalent to natural gas, and can be used in the same consumption points as natural gas.
Glimstedt has been advising Bioforce since 2021.
The new Ebavere biomethane plant is the most modern biomethane plant in Estonia, capable of handling up to 130 000 tonnes of biodegradable materials per year. The biomethane produced will be equivalent to the annual fuel supply of 80 gas buses. Biomethane, produced from biodegradable materials, is an environmentally friendly methane-rich gas that can be used wherever natural gas is used.
Bioforce invested nearly €10 million in the construction of the plant. In addition to the production of biomethane, the new plant is also important from a regional policy point of view by creating new jobs in the municipality of Väike-Maarja.
Henry Uljas, advisor to Bioforce: “The Ebavere biomethane plant will increase energy security and contribute to meeting climate targets – the decomposition of organic materials releases methane gas, which is at least 28 times more dangerous to the environment than CO₂. The plant will also contribute to the promotion of sustainable energy production in the region. This is why it is important to divert and recycle this waste in the plant.”
Biomethane is an example of the circular economy, where innovative technologies turn agricultural by-products from farms in the region into an environmentally friendly fuel that can also be refuelled at the nearby Kaarma station.
